Underground, in a basement, on a regional fence line, mid-Optus-outage. Invoice Better creates, saves and sends ATO-compliant GST invoices completely offline. AirDrop on the spot, or queue email for when you're back in range.
Cloud invoicing apps fail in the worst possible places
Most invoicing apps cache a few things and call themselves offline. They still need a login token, a sync, an internet handshake. Invoice Better doesn't.
| Capability (no internet) | Cloud Apps (Tradify, Xero, MYOB) | "Offline-Friendly" (Billdu, ServiceM8) | Invoice Better |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open the app | Login required | Yes (cached) | Yes |
| Create a new invoice | No | Limited | Yes — full |
| Add a new client | No | Often no | Yes |
| Generate PDF | No | No | Yes |
| Email the invoice | No | No | Queued, sends when back online |
| AirDrop to client on-site | No | No | Yes |
| Edit your price list | No | No | Yes |
| Mark invoice as paid | No | No | Yes |
Plumbers under houses, sparkies in switchboards, tilers in basements. No mobile signal, no Wi-Fi, no chance.
Rural fencing, ag, mining-adjacent. 4G drops out the moment you leave the highway.
Steel-frame buildings, concrete basements, big sheds. Reception is gone the moment you walk inside.
Airplane mode, international roaming costs, dodgy airport Wi-Fi. Invoicing keeps working.
The cell tower goes down. Optus has a national outage. Your client still wants the invoice now.
Quick-write 4 invoices in the carpark before driving home. No signal needed. No 9pm catch-up.
All data lives in iPhone's encrypted local DB. No server.
Create clients, items, invoices, quotes — fully offline.
Email queues. AirDrop instantly. iMessage / WhatsApp PDF.
Queued emails fly out the moment you're back online.
Most invoicing apps describe themselves as "offline-friendly" or "with offline mode". When you read the fine print, that usually means:
Invoice Better is different. There's no login. No account. No server. The app uses Apple's SwiftData framework — every invoice, client, price list item, logo and PDF is stored in an encrypted local database on your iPhone. The app doesn't need to "phone home" to work, because there's nothing to phone home to.
You have three ways to deliver an invoice without a connection:
Because your invoices, clients, pricing and PDFs live entirely on your phone, there's nothing for us — or anyone — to leak. We never receive your business data: no client list uploaded, no invoices stored on a server, no PDFs routed through our infrastructure. We do collect anonymous, aggregated app-usage signals (which screens get opened, crash reports, paywall views) so we can prioritise the right features and fix bugs. We never see invoice content, client names, your pricing or PDFs — because that data never leaves your device. That's the line: your business is yours, our analytics are anonymous and aggregate.
Two layers of protection:
The full strength of offline-first invoicing only shows up when you combine it with a saved smart price list. Tap a saved item, get the formula-calculated price, generate a quote on the spot, convert to an invoice when the job's done — all without ever opening a browser.

Real questions Australian tradies and sole traders ask before switching invoicing apps.
Yes. Invoice Better is local-first: all your data lives in an encrypted on-device database (Apple SwiftData). There is no account, no login, and no server. You can install, create, edit and send invoices completely offline.
Yes. You can AirDrop the PDF directly to a client on-site, share via iMessage or WhatsApp (which queue offline), or compose an email — iOS Mail queues it and sends automatically when signal returns.
No. Invoice Better's database is included in your standard iCloud Backup. If you change phones, restore from iCloud and your data comes with you. You can also manually export a full .zip backup at any time from Settings.
Two reasons. First, privacy: cloud sync requires us to hold your data, which means a target for breaches. Second, simplicity: cloud sync introduces account systems, billing, password resets — things tradies hate. The Invoice Better promise is 'open the app and start invoicing'.
Not currently — Invoice Better is built for the single primary device of a sole trader. Most tradies invoice from their iPhone in the ute. If multi-device sync becomes a priority for our users we'll consider an opt-in encrypted iCloud sync option in future.
No. The PDFs are pixel-identical whether generated online or offline. Same ATO-compliant tax invoice format, same logo, same PAID stamp, same numbering.
App updates come from the App Store as normal, which requires internet. But the app itself runs offline indefinitely between updates.
Yes — usually 5-10× faster. Cloud apps wait for a server round-trip on every save, every PDF generation, every send. Local-first means everything is instant. We measured: average invoice creation time is 28 seconds in Invoice Better vs 2-4 minutes in major cloud competitors.
iOS encrypts all app data at rest using your device passcode and Face/Touch ID. Invoice Better adds nothing on top because it doesn't need to — Apple's framework is already industry-leading.
Your business data — invoices, clients, pricing, PDFs — never leaves your device. We do collect anonymous, aggregate app-usage signals (which screens get opened, crash reports, paywall views, basic feature usage) to prioritise the right improvements and fix bugs. We never see invoice content, client names or your pricing because that data physically lives on your phone, not on a server we control.
Yes — that's exactly what it's for. Tradies and contractors working anywhere from western NSW farmland to outback mine sites use Invoice Better daily without ever needing reception.
